'JOSHUA ROZENBERG (Facebook) 4th August 2016: Why did Dame Lowell Goddard resign today as chair of the independent inquiry into child sexual abuse? Her terms of appointment require her to give three months’ notice unless the home secretary agrees that she can leave earlier.

The inquiry website says simply that she offered her resignation and this was accepted by Amber Rudd, the home secretary. However, we can learn a little more from the exchange of letters published by the government.

Goddard’s letter gives no reason for her resignation. But what’s curious about her resignation letter is that the letters QC appear after her typed name at the end. Her correct post-nominals are DNZM (comparable to a DBE). High Court judges in England and Wales drop the letters QC on appointment and I believe the same is true in New Zealand.

***Maybe I’m reading too much into it but I think the her resignation letter, though printed on the inquiry team’s letterhead***, may have been drafted and typed for her by the home office. "The [CSA] Inquiry is independent and sits outside of the Home Office reporting structures, although they will provide the Home Secretary with a final report for publication. Therefore, it will be for the Panel and new Chairman, when appointed, to decide how they want to take the Inquiry forward. This includes the methodology and how they will engage with

survivors to inform their work. The Inquiry is supported by a Secretariat who report directly to the Panel."

Mr O'Brien continues... The child sexual abuse inquiry liaison team sit within the safeguarding Directorate within the Home Office and is currently led by Helen Griffiths and Cheryl Mendes.
